MAINE ORCHARD CLAIMS “BEST CORN MAZE” IN THE USA FOR FOURTH YEAR IN A ROW
Aside from pumpkin patches, apple picking, and hay rides, nothing encapsulates fall better than a corn maze in the United States. Many of the corn mazes built by Treworgy Family Orchards in Levant, Maine, have won awards from USA Today's annual 10BEST Readers' Choice Awards, demonstrating their expertise in the field. The magazine has now named Treworgy's corn maze the greatest in the country for the fourth year in a row.
The farm chose a novel and somewhat surprising theme for their 25th maze anniversary: "Whale of a Tale." In honour of Maine children's author Robert McCloskey and his cherished 1989 classic Burt Dow, Deep-Water Man, the corn maze was created to resemble a gigantic whale, as the name implies. Interestingly, this maze is the second one that the book inspired; in 2019, the orchard made a maze with a Blueberries for Sal theme that won second place in the USA Today contest.
According to a recent comment from Jonathan Kenerson, co-owner of Treworgy Family Orchards, "McCloskey's stories capture the heart of Maine life, and Burt Dow, Deep-Water Man highlights the courage and determination of our commercial fishing business."
The farm's famous maze was influenced not only by McCloskey but also by the unique character of Maine. Because of its rich coastline, which is teeming with lobsters, oysters, mussels, and other aquatic life, the state has a thriving fishing sector. Even its state flag, which shows a farmer and a sailor leaning against a golden seal, honours its maritime and agricultural heritage.
“We wanted to highlight the twin industries that have defined Maine for generations: farming and fishing,” Kenerson adds.
Treworgy has continuously received recognition in USA Today's Choice Awards since 2018, placing first or second in the "Best Corn Maze" category. The family farm also took home the "Best Pumpkin Patch" title in 2023 and 2024, and it finished second in the country this year.
“When visiting Treworgy, you may want to hop aboard the hayride or take a horse-drawn farm tour so you can get a good look at the expansive pumpkin patch,” USA Today writes. “After all, it covers eight miles of rows!” As for its corn mazes: “Home to the longest continually running corn maze in the state, Treworgy’s maze covers over four acres and consists of 60,000 plants grown to a height of 10 feet.”
Through early November, Treworgy's corn maze is open Tuesday through Sunday. On a few evenings in October, the farm will host special night maze activities where guests can use torches to navigate the maze "for an extra challenge."
