ASTRONAUTS OF ARTEMIS III TO WEAR GOLDEN VISOR CREATED BY OAKLEY AND AXIOM SPACE

Launched in 2027, NASA's Artemis III mission will be the first crewed lunar landing since Apollo 17 in 1972. This time, however, the crew will be using a spacesuit that was created by Axiom Space in collaboration with Prada for the outer layer design, as well as a state-of-the-art visor system that was created by the eyewear company Oakley. The gold-plated visor of the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) spacesuit, designed especially for the severe conditions of lunar exploration, will shield humans from the sun's harmful radiation and blinding glare.

It is anticipated that two astronauts from the Artemis III mission will explore the area close to the lunar South Pole during their week-long stay on the moon. They must, however, arrive equipped and ready before venturing into the unknown. According to astronaut and Axiom Space Chief Technology Officer Koichi Wakata, "the light is so harsh in space, it seems like it's piercing through your eyeballs." "To protect [our] eyes and [provide] optimal visibility so [astronauts] can function in the difficult lunar environment, we need an outstanding visor system."

Using its cutting-edge High-Definition Optics (HDO) technology, Oakley created the visor system to improve astronaut performance, safety, and eyesight on the lunar surface. According to Oakley, astronauts are athletes on a different level. "They have to work in visually complicated situations and are exposed to UV radiation all the time."

A tiny layer of 24K gold, one of several protective coating layers on the visor, helps regulate light transmission while blocking UV, infrared, and solar radiation. Much of the filtering is done by the gold layer, while the abrasive dust of the moon is shielded by an outer layer that is strong and resistant to scratches. The visor also has a flip-down screen that can totally block light from the upper half in really intense conditions.
