LOTTERY WINNER WINS $1 MILLION AFTER BUYING TICKET WITH $20 FOUND ON THE GROUND
Many would count it a blessing if they came across a dollar bill while out and about. And finding a $20 bill? How can it get better than that? Sure, it can. A man from North Carolina named Jerry Hicks found a $20 bill and used it to purchase a scratch-off lottery ticket. He ended up winning $1 million.
Hicks noticed the bill in the parking lot while he was en route to the convenience store. He entered and selected an Extreme Cash scratch-off card worth $25. The maximum prize that players can receive from this card is $1 million, and their chances of winning are 1 in 2,017,650. He told the North Carolina Education Lottery, "I actually bought that ticket because they didn't have the one I was looking for."
His reward came with a difficult decision. Hicks had to choose between receiving the $600,000 prize in one lump sum or as a $50,000 annuity spread over 20 years when he got to lottery headquarters on a Friday. After making the necessary state and federal tax withholdings, the man chose the latter and went home with $429,007.
After 56 years working as a carpenter, Hicks now intends to retire with his winnings. He also mentioned his desire to support his kids. However, he says there’s something he wants to do first: “We are going to head straight to Golden Corral and eat everything they’ve got.”
