MAINE ORCHARD TAKES FOURTH CONSECUTIVE WIN FOR BEST CORN MAZE IN NATION
Nothing captures fall like a corn maze, aside from hay rides, pumpkin fields, and apple picking. Treworgy Family Orchards, located in Levant, Maine, has extensive experience building corn mazes, many of which have been honoured by USA Today in its yearly 10BEST Readers' Choice Awards. The magazine has now named Treworgy's corn maze the greatest in the country for the fourth year in a row.
The farm chose the unusual and possibly surprising theme of "Whale of a Tale" for their 25th maze anniversary. In honour of Maine children's author Robert McCloskey and his famous 1989 classic Burt Dow, Deep-Water Man, the corn maze was created to resemble a gigantic whale, as the name implies. Interestingly, this maze is the second that the book has inspired; in 2019, the orchard produced a maze with a Blueberries for Sal theme that won second place in the USA Today competition.
In a recent statement, Jonathan Kenerson, co-owner of Treworgy Family Orchards, said, "McCloskey's stories capture the heart of Maine life, and Burt Dow, Deep-Water Man highlights the courage and determination of our commercial fishing business." The farm's award-winning maze draws inspiration from Maine's unique personality in addition to McCloskey. The state's rich coastline, which is teeming with lobsters, oysters, mussels, and other aquatic life, contributes significantly to its thriving fishing economy. Its state flag, which depicts a farmer and a sailor leaning against a golden seal, is a celebration of its agricultural and marine roots.
Kenerson continues, "We wanted to highlight the twin businesses that have defined Maine for generations: farming and fishing."
Treworgy has won first or second place in the "Best Corn Maze" category of USA Today's choice awards since 2018. The family farm placed second in the country this year after winning the "Best Pumpkin Patch" title in 2023 and 2024. According to USA Today, "you might want to board the hayride or take a horse-drawn farm tour when visiting Treworgy to get a good look at the huge pumpkin patch." "It covers eight kilometres of rows, after all!"
Regarding its corn mazes, "Treworgy's maze comprises over four acres and consists of 60,000 plants grown to a height of 10 feet, making it home to the longest continuously running corn maze in the state."
Through early November, Treworgy's corn maze is open Tuesdays through Sundays. On certain evenings in October, there will be special nighttime labyrinth activities when guests can use torches to explore the maze "for an extra challenge," according to the farm.
