STUDY REVEALS THE 'SWEET SPOT' OF STEPS YOU SHOULD TAKE DAILY TO STAY HEALTHY
Walking 10,000 steps a day has gained popularity in recent years among people who want to lead healthy lives. However, there is supposedly no scientific basis for this goal, even if it looks good on fitness trackers and is undoubtedly something to boast about when accomplished. Rather, scientists have investigated how many steps you actually need to do to maintain your health. It's also less than previously believed, which is surprising.
In a recent study, a group of researchers from Central South University and Yale University School of Medicine seems to have discovered this ideal location for strolling. Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005–2006, they discovered that 8,250 steps per day significantly decreased health risks, while 9,700 steps is the recommended daily total for people with cardiovascular diseases.
The researchers note that engaging in moderate physical activity, regardless of quantity, is beneficial even though this provides a set objective. They state that "among hypertensive adults, increasing daily step count is related to lower all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, with maximal benefits shown below 8,250 and 9,700 daily steps, respectively." "Setting reasonable and achievable activity objectives is crucial for hypertensive populations, as moderate levels of physical exercise offer significant health advantages."
This is consistent with research published in the journal JAMA International Medicine in 2022. In those days, scientists found that walking more reduced the risk of cancer and other diseases. Although people who walk 10,000 steps had a lower risk of cancer than those who walk 8,000 and 6,000, the benefits stop after 10,000, so there's really no point in pushing yourself, especially if you find it difficult to reach that threshold.
Furthermore, walking is beneficial for both your physical and mental well-being. Compared to individuals who don't walk as much, those who walk more daily had a lower likelihood of experiencing depressive symptoms or receiving a diagnosis, according to a study released in late 2024. Additionally, the advantages are greater if you can exercise outside rather than at a gym or in an urban area. Go ahead and put on your walking shoes!
