MAN SETS GUINNESS RECORD FOR MANUALLY TYPING EVERY NUMBER FROM ONE TO ONE MILLION ON A TYPEWRITER

Setting goals is a terrific approach to accomplish tasks, but not all plans must make sense to everyone. One individual who demonstrated that perseverance can surpass even the most bizarre aspirations is Les Stewart, an Australian. He challenged himself to use his typewriter to painstakingly type out every number from one to one million. He achieved the Guinness World Record for the "Fastest time to type one to one million" in 16 years.

In 1982, Stewart started writing out each number, and on December 7, 1998, he finished the task. His accomplishment is all the more remarkable given that he typed with only one finger due to partial paralysis following a Vietnam War deployment. Stewart used seven manual typewriters to type three pages a day on average to meet his objective. Every hour, he spent twenty minutes typing. By the one millionth number, he had consumed 19,890 pages and 1,000 ink ribbons.

Breaking records was nothing new to Stewart. He had already achieved Australian records for treading water and swimming continuously, remaining afloat for an amazing thirty hours straight, before his typing accomplishment. Stewart responded that his physical limitations restricted his ability when asked why he took up the typing assignment. It was also that he liked typing. He had even been a typing instructor before his accident caused him to leave the police department.
