MAN KNITS SWEATER OF DESTINATIONS AND TAKES PHOTOS WEARING THE SWEATER AT THE DESTINATION
Sam Barsky, an artist, has a special way of honouring the places he has visited. Rather than go for the standard memento, such as a magnet or a coffee mug, he makes his own sweater ahead of time, featuring images from the place he plans to visit. Then he goes there and puts on his knitted garment and strikes a pose in front of it. Barsky's textile portfolio showcases the impressive intricacies of the sweater, which also functions as a wearable postcard. When displayed across his chest, his subjects—which include rock formations, fields, bridges, and lighthouses—are all instantly recognisable.
Over 140 sweaters have been knitted by the Baltimore-based artist in her 20 years of knitting. He sees knitting as a natural fit with travel. He gets inspiration for his clothing from his travels, and by hiking to those locations, he has a reason to wear the things he makes. "I travelled to get a picture there after finishing one of the Mackinac Bridge in Michigan," Barsky says to My Modern Met.
A recurring theme in Barsky's writing is Baltimore. It is the subject of his knitting at the moment.
