OCTOPUS GIVES ULTIMATE SACRIFICE TO SAFE HER OFF SPRINGS
Perhaps one of the most fascinating creatures on the planet is the octopus. It can regrow damaged limbs, spew ink to stun predators, and change colour to fit in with its surroundings. These animals are also very intelligent; they can jimmy locks, solve puzzles, and navigate mazes. We now get to see an aspect of octopus life that we don't often get to see in a viral video released by CBC.
The female big Pacific octopus lays over 80,000 eggs in a single batch throughout the course of her five-year life, as explained in the video. The mother octopus stays by their side for the six to ten months it takes for her eggs to hatch. During that period, she tends to her eggs by fanning them to keep them safe from predators, bacteria-free, and oxygenated. She also stops eating during this time, which causes her to gradually deteriorate as she makes the ultimate sacrifice for her children.
As the newborn octopuses emerge from their eggs and are blown out of the den and into the ocean by their mother, the film concludes on a sorrowful note. A genuine monument to a mother's love, their mother dies as the hatchlings leave in search of cold water currents, yet she does so after achieving her objective.
