ORCA WHO SPEND HIS LIFE CAPTIVE AT SEAWORLD DIES
At the age of 29, Keto, an orca that spent its entire life in captivity, passed away. Trainer Alexis Martínez and Keto, who was born in captivity at SeaWorld, were getting ready for a series of Christmas shows at Loro Parque in Tenerife in December 2009 when a training session went horribly wrong.
On Christmas Eve 2009, Keto attacked Martínez, and the trainer died as a result of his wounds. He "died due to grave injuries sustained by an orca attack, including multiple compression fractures, tears to vital organs, and the bite marks of the animal on his body," according to a cause of death report.
In 1995, Keto was born in Orlando, Florida, at SeaWorld's theme park. According to reports, he was then moved between parks and, by the time he was five years old, had performed at every orca stadium owned by the company. In 2006, he was moved to Loro Parque in Tenerife.
"Loro Parque is heartbroken by the loss of Keto," the park wrote in a statement posted on Facebook on November 22. With deep sorrow, we announce the tragic news of our beloved 29-year-old male orca, Keto, passing away. Keto has been a remarkable representative of his species since 2006, enthralling everyone with his majestic demeanour and distinct personality. His departure creates a hole in our hearts and the team as a whole that cannot be filled.
"Keto was much more than just an orca to those who loved him and spent every day with him; he was family. Those who had the honor of knowing and learning from him will always carry his memory close to their hearts. Since then, Keto's death has been discussed by the Dolphin Project and animal rights organisation PETA.
