REPORTER WHO COULD NOT KEEP HER BROKEN BOSTON ACCENT AT BAY WENT VIRAL

Even while on-camera reporters try their hardest to seem professional and polished, occasionally something happens that throws them off. And it's typically really charming. Ellen Fleming, a reporter for the Massachusetts State House for the NBC News affiliate WWLP-22News, undoubtedly experienced it. Fleming briefly lets her Boston accent leak in a little video that she shared on Twitter before pausing to recover herself. Fleming released the outtake online, and even though the blunder didn't occur live on television, it went viral.

Fleming is shown in the video delivering important news while standing in the State House. "Parts of this bill are similar to the executive orders that have already been put in place in New Hampshire," she claims. Then she abruptly pauses and pronounces "New Hampshire" correctly. Many others were captivated by the charming moment and shared stories of similar mistakes in the past.

After watching the video, one reporter said that "[she] felt seen, except with a NY accent!" Several reporters talked about their own struggles to hide their genuine accents. Another said that although she "still loves[s] my accent," the same thing frequently happened to her while she was on television.

Millions of people have watched Fleming's video, and the majority of them have expressed support. People have made her laugh a lot with their remarks, whether they are telling their own tales, saying they adore the accent, or sharing amusing memes. "It's been a lot of fun, people have their opinions about the Boston accent, but it's been mostly positive," she said.

So why don't newsreaders use their natural voices instead of speaking with a neutral accent? In other words, it gives people access to more employment options. In order to make them more appealing when covering any market, journalists who study broadcasting are taught a non-regional accent. Speaking without a regional accent makes it easier for many reporters to find employment because they travel around the nation on a regular basis. This is due to research showing that when news is reported by someone with a non-local accent, viewers are less likely to believe it. On-air journalists will hone a General American accent to be ready to report anywhere in the nation.
