SISTER OF THE GROOM READS HILARIOUS PROPOSAL PLANS HER BROTHER WROTE DOWN AT AGE 9
It can be a great responsibility to give a wedding speech, but for a sibling, it can also be an opportunity to have some fun. Many brothers and sisters choose the humorous path, making fun of the bride or groom by sharing embarrassing anecdotes from their past. In one wedding, the groom unintentionally supplied the hysterical material for his sister's speech, which was given at the wedding. Griffin Carew wrote a ridiculous wedding proposal for his fictional future wife when he was just 9 years old. His sister Hope Carew discovered the note, kept it for years, and ultimately chose to read it aloud during her speech at his wedding.
In 2014, while sorting through a box of old memories, the devoted sister—a stand-up comedian—found the piece of paper. Written as a letter, the intricate plans had been concealed in the groom's yearbook for 2002–2003. Carew knew the letter's moment had come when she found out about her brother's engagement. She spent eight months searching for it because she thought she had lost it, and she finally found it in its original location right before the wedding.
Carew asked her sister-in-law for permission to give a surprise "secret" speech in the hopes of surprising her brother, and she granted it. Before reading out her brother's over-20-year-old plans in front of the entire audience, Carew cheekily begged him not to kill her as she took the microphone. Carew posted the amusing speech to TikTok, where it has since gone viral after being caught on camera.
The groom is a multibillionaire, and the crazy plans include a fast-paced global tour that includes stops in Cincinnati, Cabo San Lucas, French Polynesia, and Paris, romantic moments on yachts and private planes, shopping sprees where he buys his future wife anything she desires, and a vow to "obey [her] every command." The guests at the wedding were laughing at the ridiculous plans. Carew told People, "One person peed a little and people were falling out of their chairs dying laughing." "At one point, my brother pretended to flee, which further encouraged the crowd."
In the end, the groom appreciated the gesture. “My brother was cracking up at the whole thing and hugged me afterwards, which was a slight relief because obviously what I read was super embarrassing. If he didn't have such a good sense of humour, I never would have done it, but he's a Leo and can take the heat.”
Ultimately, guests found the crazy plans endearing and saw it as proof that he was always a lover at heart and would make a devoted husband. The speech was just in keeping with the affectionate sister's work, according to the Carew family. She acknowledges, "My family is really supportive of my stand-up comedy, so they're used to me embarrassing them on stage. To be honest, I think my brother was just relieved that I wasn't sharing any more embarrassing stories about him."
