Some weird things have happened at McDonald's but this time, it's cause to celebrate.

McDonald's is basically giving away free Big Macs by creating their own McDonald's currency. So... it's basically burger currency. McDonald's is officially celebrating 50 years of the Big Mac, which means that the Big Mac was born in 1968 – half a century ago! To honour the iconic burger, McDonald's revealed that they will be releasing the MacCoin, a "global currency" that can be redeemed for a free burger at McDonald's locations around the world.

The first 6.2 million customers can receive a MacCoin with their Big Mac on Thursday, August 2, to be redeemed starting the next day at participating McDonald's in more than 50 countries around the world, including all 14,000 stores in the US. These coins will be redeemable for a Big Mac until supplies run.

So why not just give away Big Macs for free? The MacCoins aren't meant to simply act as coupons, they are also a limited-edition collection that is being created to commemorate the Big Mac Index: an economic tool invented by The Economist that uses the price of the Big Mac to compare the purchasing power of different international currencies.

Five different coins will be released, each with a different design, that represents each decade of the Big Mac with seven different languages, Arabic, English, Indonesian, Mandarin, Portuguese, French, and Spanish carved along the rim of the coin to represent the participating countries.

McDonald's released a description of the five cultural references appearing on their coins: The '70s, showcasing the decade’s flower power; the ‘80s alluding to pop art; the ‘90s defined with bold, abstract shapes; the early ‘00s specifically focusing on the technology that was at the forefront of the turn of the century; and the ‘10s MacCoin calling attention to the evolution of communication.

In an Interview with USA TODAY, Steve Easterbrook, McDonalds CEO explained that Thursday's release date was chosen to commemorate the 100th birthday of Jim Delligatti, a McDonald’s franchisee in western Pennsylvania who invented the Big Mac.

On a lighter note, it's official: weird and wonderful things happen at McDonald's! Don't believe us? Check out the video below!
