MAN PREVIOUSLY WRONGFULLY CONVICTED SENT BACK TO PRISON AFTER SHOCKINGLY TRUE CONFESSION
A man who was incarcerated for 24 years after his false murder conviction was overturned has been sent back to prison, where he will remain for the rest of his life. When the case went unsolved, they started to blame Shaurn Thomas for the robbery and shooting death of 78-year-old Puerto Rican businessman Domingo Martinez in November 1990.
Despite having a strong alibi to show that he couldn't have committed the murder, 20-year-old Thomas was wrongfully convicted of the crime and given a life sentence without the possibility of parole in December 1994, four years later. Thomas was already in a juvenile jail when the murder occurred, according to the Innocence Project, and he wasn't released until later that day after Martinez had already been killed. Thanks to the Innocence Project, Thomas was ultimately found not guilty in 2017 at the age of 43. The city of Philadelphia also awarded him a substantial $4.1 million settlement.
According to ABC News, he stated at the time: "I have no ill will toward anyone. For what purpose? Life isn't long enough for that. You cannot regain it. I simply keep going. Although it was a tragedy for me, I'm fairly certain that I'm not alone. However, six years later, he hired one of his girlfriend's childhood friends to sell drugs for him on the street, suggesting that the money didn't go very far.
By January 3, 2023, Akeem Edwards had stolen $1,200 worth of cocaine from Thomas to sell for him, but he had never given him the money.
