PARAPLEGIC ATHLETE WALKS TO CARRY THE OLYMPIC TORCH WITH HELP FROM ROBOT EXOSKELETON

One of the most anticipated Olympic events is the relay of the Olympic torch. The flame is carried by athletes and celebrities of all ages in a show of sportsmanship and fraternity from Greece to the host city. Kevin Piette, a French Paralympian, is one of the last torchbearers for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. He recently made history by being the first athlete to take part in the torch relay while wearing an exoskeleton.

2012 saw Piette, a Paralympic tennis player, suffer a motorcycle accident that left him without the use of his legs. In addition to participating in this sport, he works as a "test pilot" for Wandercraft, a French company that created the Atalante X, the first walking exoskeleton in history that is self-stabilising and intended for use by individuals with disabilities.

According to the company, Wandercraft has developed the first naturally occurring exoskeleton that can walk without the need for crutches. "Those who were formerly confined to wheelchairs will be able to move freely, both at home and in their communities, while maintaining their balance, hands-free, and safely, thanks to the personal exoskeleton."

Piette was launched into the exoskeleton following her wheelchair-assisted arrival at the relay point. Then he strolled through the heart of Poissy, a grin on his face as the crowd applauded him cautiously but resolutely. He posted on Instagram, saying, "I was able to carry this flame that represents so many beautiful things with pride and honour." "I will never forget this day because of commitment, sport, innovation, inclusion, hope, and the future."

"Kevin embodies the spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation, coupled with contagious energy, and the desire for a more inclusive society through his dedication to sports!" peruses the Olympic website. The group applauded his contributions to the exoskeleton's development as well as his participation in "cybathlons," which are contests where disabled individuals use assistive technology to perform daily tasks. "Kevin encourages people to participate in sports and support innovation for the disabled by carrying the Olympic Torch!"
