VIDEO: A MECHANIC GOT RUN OVER AT THE GRAND PRIX...
This video is not for those with a weak stomach but it is something that will make you cringe and replay at least 10 times. Basically, Kimi Raikkonen ran over his own mechanic in a horrific pit-lane incident at the Bahrain Grand Prix. It sounds horrible (and looks horrible) but here is what happened:
The Ferrari driver followed Sebastian Vettel into the pits for a quick tyre change on the 37th lap. However, the Fin was given the green light too early as the rear left tire was not fully attached. Raikkonen then drove off on the green light, running over the mechanic’s leg – which bends the wrong way – and no human should ever have to see their leg bend the other way, right... The mechanic dropped like a ton of bricks, rolling around in pain as his team surrounded him.
The driver has received a ton of criticism after the incident but Ferrari has released a statement on Twitter saying that the mechanic was rushed to hospital with a broken leg (bones just don’t bend that way). They later added: "Apparently a shinbone and fibula fracture, our thoughts are with Francesco, stay strong."
Former Formula One driver, Jolyon Palmer, told the BBC: “No, no, no! What happened there!? Raikkonen is distraught, he just chucked the steering wheel back into the cockpit.
We still have to think about the mechanic who is down on the ground. A nasty incident.”
Raikkonen commented on the incident: “I go when the light is green. I don't see what happens behind and unfortunately, he got hurt.”
