VIDEO: THE BIG BANG OF ALL OF THE SPACE MYTHS YOU THOUGHT WERE TRUE

At some point in time, we have all wondered what it would be like to go to space and walk on the moon. Maybe you even had a dream to become an astronaut as a kid. When we hear rumours of people being able to pay for a trip to space as a vacation, we start saving! Imagine being the first person to discover life on Mars! There are many myths about space and travelling to space that we believe which simply aren't true.

Remember when you were a kid and the sun was always in the corner of the page, coloured bright yellow and orange? You'd be forgiven for thinking the afternoon sun looks yellow – but the light it gives off is technically white. The Earth's atmosphere makes the star appear yellow. The gases bend the light in an effect called Rayleigh scattering, which is what also makes the sky appear blue and causes sunsets to blaze into brilliant oranges and reds.

Movies also love to dramatise space, picturing an asteroid belt as certain death, meaning that hysteria and panic breaks out. Well, the asteroid belt is a zone 200 million to 300 million miles from the sun and is actually an incredibly lonely and desolate void. If you pulled all the asteroids in that belt together, they'd be only about 4% of the mass of Earth's moon, so the likelihood of crashing into one is pretty slim.

It is believed that is always freezing in space, so much so that without the proper equipment, you would literally freeze. In some senses this is true because if you're in total darkness at the coldest spot in the known universe, the vacuum of space can get down to -454 degrees Fahrenheit. But, in sunlight near Earth, temperatures can swing to a boiling 250 degrees Fahrenheit. That's why astronauts wear reflective white spacesuits.

But who better to bunk myths than an actual astronaut? Chris Hadfield explains exactly what it's like in space and he holds nothing back!
