VIDEO: THE NIGHTMARE BEHIND SELENA GOMEZ'S KIDNEY TRANSPLANT
In September last year, Selena Gomez made a shocking announcement after her fans had commented on lack of public appearances at the time. She announced that she needed a kidney transplant as a result of her severe lupus which was affecting her overall health.
Dr. Alana Levine, Rheumatologist explained to Billboard: "People can have mild or more aggressive symptoms and stages of lupus. One of the organs that lupus can affect is the kidneys. It's called lupus nephritis, which is inflammation of the kidneys. When the kidneys are inflamed, they're unable to properly filter toxins from the body out through the urine. As toxins build up, the kidneys might not be able to filter the blood properly and, in severe cases, a patient can become very sick, even going into complete kidney failure if not treated."
In an incredible act of compassion, Gomez's friend, Francia Raisa, donated her kidney. Although the story has a happy ending and the surgery went successfully, Raisa revealed that Gomez did have a complication. Raisa revealed the story behind the decision to offer her kidney saying: "One day she came home, and she was emotional. I hadn't asked anything. I knew that she hadn't been feeling well. She couldn't open a water bottle one day and she chucked it and just started crying." Gomez admitted to her friend that she needed a transplant saying: "I don't know what to do. The list is 7-to-10-years long'. And it just vomited out of me. I was like, ‘Of course I'll get tested'."
Luckily, the extensive testing required by the donor was sped up to be completed in just one day and, by miracle, Raisa was a perfect candidate.
In an interview, she revealed: "Selena did have a complication, too. A few hours after our surgery, I woke up and had a text from her that said, ‘I’m really scared.’ My kidney was very active and, when it turned, it broke an artery. They had to take her into emergency surgery and get a vein from her leg and build a new artery to keep my kidney in place. She could have died."
Gomez has expressed her endless gratitude to her friend and said: “As soon as I got the kidney transplant, my arthritis went away. My lupus – there’s about a 3-5 percent chance it'll ever come back. My blood pressure is better. My energy, my life has been better."
We cant imagine a more selfless thing to do for someone you love.
