A MAN AND HIS BEST PEST CHICKEN TAKES ON THE LONG ADVENTURE AROUND THE WORLD
Many people travel with their dogs or even cats, but Guirec Soudée embarks on his adventures with his pet hen, Monique, an unlikely animal companion. With his cherished bird in tow, the 24-year-old Frenchman has been sailing around the world for two years. They left from the Canary Islands, which are close to Africa's west coast, travelled by ship to the Caribbean, and then hiked to Greenland, where they are now residents.
From the moment he met Monique, Soudée sensed something about her. "I instantly knew she was the one," Soudée stated to the BBC. Because he wanted a pet for company and hens are more independent than most animals, he chose her to go with him.
There's an extra perk: Monique lays eggs that Soudée can eat while sailing.
Sailing seems like a risky activity for a small hen, especially with the unpredictability of the weather. "I was very worried at first," Soudée acknowledges. Huge waves would cause her to stagger and give the impression that she might go overboard, but she would always manage to get back on land. She is incredibly courageous. But he puts her in her hutch for her own protection if the weather ever gets dangerous.
The odd couple is travelling to Alaska after Greenland, and Soudée will be posting more of their adventures on his website there.
