DUBAI HIGHWAY TO BECOME THE GREENEST IN THE WORLD INCLUDING 100% SOLAR-POWERED TRAMS

One of the cities in the world with the fastest growth is Dubai. In the first quarter of 2024 alone, 25,700 new people moved to the city. Aiming to enhance the quality of life for all city inhabitants, the Dubai Green Spine project, which aims to transform one of the city's main arterial roads into a “multifunctional public realm,” was recently unveiled by URB, an urban planning and development firm, in response to the demands of an expanding population.

Dubai is among the cities in the world experiencing the fastest growth. 25,700 new residents moved to the city in just the first quarter of 2024. In response to the demands of an expanding population, URB, an urban planning and development firm, recently unveiled the Dubai Green Spine project, which aims to transform one of the city's main arterial roads into a “multifunctional public realm” with the goal of improving the quality of life for all city inhabitants.

According to Baharash Bagherian, CEO of URB, "The Dubai Green Spine isn't just about transit; it's about transforming how cities function, making them more livable and human-centric." He continues, "It defies accepted norms about infrastructure, showing that our streets can greatly improve quality of life in addition to facilitating vehicular traffic. The significant influence careful, integrated urban planning can have on a city's well-being and vitality is demonstrated by this project.

The goal of this enormous infrastructure project is to mitigate many of the problems caused by Dubai's rapid growth rather than trying to solve every one of them. The parks that encircle and span the 64-kilometre route are designed to reduce the effects of heat islands by offering air and shade, and the bike and walking paths will link communities to create "20-minute cities" where a 20-minute walk can meet all of a person's needs. Additionally, the plan calls for the development of commercial and cultural centres.

The Dubai Green Spine is in line with the city's 2040 Urban Master Plan, which projects that there will be close to 8 million people living there. To assist a city that faces particular weather challenges because of its hot, dry climate, the plan combines urban development with environmental efforts by designing infrastructure with people from all walks of life and many of Dubai's expansive areas in mind.

Over time, the Dubai Green Spine may not only develop into the green core of the city but also serve as a model for other cities resolving similar problems. Ultimately, this project demonstrates that several realities can come true: communities can be strengthened rather than split apart by large-scale development projects, infrastructure can be constructed without further harming the environment, and, most importantly, integrating nature into our cities not only improves their aesthetics but also increases their long-term viability.
