HUGE FROG BECOMES INTERNET SENSATION AS VIEWERS ARE LEFT IN DISBELIEF
We have come across some of the cutest animals as videos and images travel on social media. Yet, a recent picture on Twitter has people questioning whether it is actually real.
Frogs are possibly some of the most fascinating animals on the planet, as our amphibian friends come in a wide array of species with their own unique attributes and physiology. While some boast translucent skin or striking colour combinations, others are more adept at blending in.
However, it is hard for a frog who is made to blend in to not stand out after becoming an internet sensation. One amazing frog, in particular, is currently circulating the web for its unusual body size.
A Twitter user posted pictures of a "rare creature" with an impossibly round, blob-like body and a duly expressive face. It has since been retweeted, liked, and shared thousands of times. The images have gathered several varied reactions from users, either finding the frog super cute or questioning if it does exist.
Many have speculated that it is a shell-less turtle. Others joke that it is the evolutionary ancestor of Jabba the Hutt. However, a Twitter user named Jodi Rowley, a "conservation biologist obsessed with frogs", cleared the air. She confirmed that the bulbous creature is a species of frog known as the Blunt-headed Burrowing Frog or Glyphoglossus molossus.
With their clever self-defence mechanism, the frog can puff itself up and appear oversized to any threat along the way. Even after the confirmation by Rowley that such frogs actually exist, some people are still in disbelief. They question the existence of any such "creature" at all.
However, as we all know, the world is filled with an estimated 8.7 million species of plants and animals, and the human race has yet to discover and identify them all.
