STEVE JOBS HONORED AS INNOVATOR WITH UNIQUE $1 COIN

With his technological advancements, the late Steve Jobs transformed the world. He was one of the greatest innovators in American history, having contributed to the development of the Macintosh, the Apple II computer, the iPhone, and Pixar in its early years. As part of the 2026 American Innovation $1 Coin Program, the US Mint will produce a unique Steve Jobs coin to commemorate this legacy.

Jobs is shown in the design sitting with his legs crossed, dressed in his trademark turtleneck, pants, and sneakers. The backdrop depicts a landscape of Northern California, replete with rolling hills covered in oak trees. The U.S. Mint states that "[Jobs'] stance and expression, caught in a moment of introspection, indicate how this setting inspired his ambition to turn sophisticated technology into something as intuitive and spontaneous as nature itself."

The inscriptions on the coin pay homage to both California, the state the design represents, and Jobs himself. Additionally, the coin includes the phrase "Make Something Wonderful," which is a portion of a longer statement by Jobs that goes, "There are many ways to be as a person, and some people express their deep appreciation in different ways, but one of the ways that I believe people express their appreciation to the rest of humanity is to make something wonderful and put it out there." Additionally, a posthumous book containing Jobs' writings, interviews, and speeches is named after the phrase.

Elana Hagler, the U.S. Mint's creative infusion program designer, created the coin's image, while Phebe Hemphill, a Mint medallic artist, created the sculpture. The phrases "In God We Trust" and a striking profile of the Statue of Liberty are featured on the obverse design.

Dr Norman Borlaug of Iowa, an agricultural pioneer dubbed "the father of the Green Revolution," the Cray-1 supercomputer, which was conceived in Wisconsin, and mobile refrigeration, which was created in Minnesota and revolutionised the trade of perishable goods, are the three other individuals who comprise the 2026 American Innovation $1 Coin Program.

Governor Gavin Newsom nominated Jobs earlier this year, and Jobs was chosen to represent California. "California and invention go hand in hand, and Steve Jobs personifies the distinctive kind of innovation that California thrives on—innovation that isn't just motivated by business but also serves as a means of transforming the world for all time," Newsom said.

Next year, the $1 Steve Jobs coin will go on sale for $13.25.
