WATCH THE MESMERISING BEATLES MUSIC VIDEO MADE OUT OF 1300 OIL PAINTINGS
The Beatles are still receiving praise more than 50 years after the release of their last album. The Fab Four won Best Music Video at the 2024 Grammy Awards for their song "I'm Only Sleeping." Visual artist Em Cooper was commissioned to make a video for this track to coincide with the release of the remastered version of their bold 1966 album Revolver.
In "I'm Only Sleeping," Lennon sings about the pleasures of staying in bed while in the musical driver's seat. George Harrison also plays a lead guitar section in reverse on the song. This was a testament to Revolver's experimental spirit because it was the first pop song to employ this technique.
Cooper took an equally experimental approach to bringing this video to life. Over the course of several months, she created 1,300 oil paintings for stop-motion animation. When she was done, she would take a picture of it and make adjustments for the next shot. She would begin anew with a blank canvas for the next sequence once a scene was ready.
Cooper's paintings are largely influenced by the psychedelic imagery that provided inspiration for The Beatles' later work. Nevertheless, the performer finds time to showcase some of their most memorable performances and outfits—even featuring a brief appearance by their previous manager, Brian Epstein. The last moments of the video show Cooper tidying up her workspace after taking us on this fantastical journey, much like waking up from a dream.
