OVER 100 THOUSAND RIBBONS HANGS OVER FORMER BERLIN WALL TO CELEBRATE 30 YEARS OF PEACE
A historic day occurred on November 9, 1989, when the Berlin Wall started to fall. Officials from East Germany declared at that time that all citizens of the German Democratic Republic were welcome to travel to West Berlin and West Germany. Though the process of unifying Germany took almost a year, November 9th has always been seen as a significant day for the divided country.
Artist Patrick Shearn and his team at Poetic Kinetics created a large-scale kinetic installation to commemorate the Peaceful Revolution's 30th anniversary, symbolising this unification.
Visions in Motion is the name of the artwork, which was on display from November 4 to November 10, 2019. The 20,000-square-foot piece of art stretched 450 feet along the Brandenburg Gate, the location of the former Wall, during this period. Shearn's version soars even though it resembles the form of the preceding division. The vibrant ripstop nylon streamers, made up of approximately 120,000 pieces of fabric, drifted together in the sky, with 30,000 of them containing handwritten messages from people in Germany and around the globe.
