FLIGHT ATTENDANT BREAKS RECORD FOR 65 YEARS OF FLYING IN SERVICE

Bette Nash took off from Reagan National Airport on her first flight as a teenager in the early 1950s. "The spiffy appearances and gracious manners of the crew members" were what Nash claimed to have fallen in love with. She began her aviation career shortly after in 1957 with Eastern Airlines, which subsequently changed its name to American Airlines. Guinness World Records states that Nash is the flight attendant with the longest service history in the world because she has remained in the profession for more than 65 years.

Since Nash began working for the airline, a lot has changed: tickets were only $12, flights were non-reservable, and Eisenhower was president. Before boarding, passengers could even purchase life insurance from a vending machine. She remembers this period of flight fondly when she served the Kennedys lobster and wore white gloves.

Nash acknowledges the advancements of today as she reflects on her beginnings in aviation. Modern technological advancements have made daily tasks easier. "The era of handwritten tickets, seat assignment stickers, and chalkboards is long gone," she reflected.

The flight attendant has welcomed other advancements in the field. Nash used to be the target of weight check-ins to make sure she kept a specific weight and surprise house visits to make sure she wasn't living with a man (flight attendants had to stay single). (At this point, such requirements are nonexistent.)

Being one of the more seasoned flight attendants, Nash has had the freedom to select her favourite route, and she has stuck with the New York to Washington, D.C. to Boston shuttle for the majority of her career. She claims it enables her to stay with her disabled son, for whom she provides care, every night when she returns home. "I desired to spend every night at home. I didn't have a choice, according to Nash.

Nash still finds joy in her work as a flight attendant after all these years. It's simply been the ideal path for a career. It's allowed me to express my love for people, and I like to think I've helped others well," the woman remarked. "I really enjoy the three-minute chats I have on board. And I'm constantly in awe of the fascinating jobs, adventures, and lives that people lead. The passengers' opinions of Nash are similar. One traveller remarked, "Even though I fly hundreds of thousands of miles a year, my best flights are always with Bette on board."

Nash has no intention of cutting her wings and giving up flying. "Why not work as long as I'm well and able to do so? Still enjoyable, according to Nash. "Moreover, I've achieved my Diamond Jubilee, akin to Queen Elizabeth!"
