FORD SUES JOHN CENA AFTER HE SOLD HIS RARE 2017 FORD GT SUPERCAR
Everyone seems to pay attention when John Cena gets into trouble because he doesn't get into trouble very often. Well, the wrestler-turned-actor got into trouble over cars on one of the few occasions that he did. Having amassed a sizable collection over the years, the WWE star is a major car enthusiast.
Even though the actor had previously upset automaker Ford, he was rumoured to have several cars in his lineup by 2021. According to GQ, Cena's resume is also quite impressive. He owns luxury vehicles such as a 1970 Plymouth Road Runner Superbird, a 2009 Chevy Corvette ZRI, and his notorious "Corvette InCenaRator."
However, it was the 2017 Ford GT that got Cena into a lot of trouble. The car, which reportedly cost more than $450,000 when it was first released, was bought by the Ricky Stanicky actor in the year of its release. Since Ford only made a few hundred of the supercars annually, fortunate GT owners must abide by stringent regulations.
According to reports, the Ford GT owners were "hand-picked customers" who were selected after completing an application process. Cena sold his car a few months after purchasing it, but one of the regulations for special customers is that you can't sell it for at least two years after you buy it.
He was not a fan. Cena broke the sales agreement by selling the car so quickly, which didn't sit well with Ford. To make matters worse, the wrestler allegedly profited from the sale and was soon facing legal action.
According to the lawsuit, Cena "unfairly made a large profit from the unauthorized resale flip of the vehicle, and Ford has suffered additional damages and losses, including, but not limited to, loss of brand value, ambassador activity, and customer goodwill due to the improper sale," according to a 2017 Forbes article.
Cena was then sued by the automaker for $500,000. Ford and Cena reached an out-of-court settlement by the following year. Outside of a formal courtroom, they reached a financial settlement, the precise amount of which was not revealed.
