WOMAN LEFT PARALYSED AFTER FREAK ACCIDENT ON A HANGING HAMMOCK
The public is now being warned by a woman who had a terrible accident while on a hammock. In July 2017, Erin Field, who had just finished her third year of college, was in North End, Boston, to meet up with Jack, her new boyfriend. She and Jack sat on a hammock that was fastened to a chimney on the roof of the building that housed her brother's apartment.
Field told NBC Boston in 2020 that the chimney collapsed "right on top" of her as soon as she sat down, leaving her quadriplegic—that is, paralysed in all four limbs.
After the accident, Field woke up believing she still had control over her legs. When her brother and Jack asked her to "straighten her legs," she was horrified to learn that she no longer had that ability. As a result, she is now unable to walk. The 28-year-old had to undergo several surgeries at the time because she claims that neither she nor her parents knew what was truly wrong. However, it really hit home to her that she was now quadriplegic when her sister informed her about the GoFundMe they had started for her.
Field told Inside Edition last week that although she is paralysed from the chest down, she can move her shoulders, triceps, and biceps, but not her hands. Although she acknowledged that she has had some "bad days," she told the publication that she has never been upset about her injuries and that she has "accepted her injury."
