OLIVIA WILDE SLAMS BLUE ORIGIN SPACE TRIP WITH A BRUTAL SHORT COMMENT
Olivia Wilde, the director of Don't Worry Darling, is the most recent to remark on the effort that sent a group of celebrities on an 11-minute space journey, but not everyone is supporting it. On Monday, April 14, billionaire Jeff Bezos successfully sent a group of well-known individuals, including singer Katy Perry and his fiancée, journalist Lauren Sánchez, on a short but historic journey into space on his private Blue Origin capsule. The stunt, which was the first all-female crew to go into space since 1963, also included journalist Gayle King, bioastronautics research scientist Amanda Nguyễn, documentary producer Kerianne Flynn, and former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe.
Many have been commenting on the matter and questioning why the celebrities even embarked on the ostensibly meaningless and exorbitantly costly journey. Olivia Wilde, an American actress and director, posted a brief but harsh statement on Instagram regarding the voyage. She posted a widely circulated meme of Perry with the title, "Getting off a commercial aircraft in 2025," showing the pop singer kissing the ground as soon as she steps out of the spacecraft. Sharing the joke, Wilde wrote: "Billion dollars bought some good memes, I guess."
Her remark coincides with the ongoing discussion about whether the journey qualifies as a "space mission" at all, given that the passengers on the self-governing ship only made contact with the outer reaches of space. They too only managed a few minutes of weightlessness at the Karman Line before plummeting back down to Earth, and screamed before landing in the Texas desert.
The 41-year-old celebrity is not the only one who has voiced their opposition to the expedition. While co-hosting an episode of Today with Jenna and Friends, Olivia Munn also questioned the necessity of it, stating: "I know this probably isn’t the hip thing to say, but there are so many other things that are so essential in the world right now. I know this is probably obnoxious, but like, it’s so much money to go to space, and there’s a lot of people who can’t even afford eggs,” she added before dubbing the journey 'gluttonous'. Actress and model Emily Ratajkowski also didn't hold back, venting about the affair on TikTok, calling it "beyond farce." "Take a look at the current situation in the world and consider how much money was spent to send these women into space—for what? What kind of marketing was that?" She added: "I'm disgusted. Literally, I'm disgusted."
Comedian Amy Schumer also appeared to make a tongue-in-cheek dig towards Perry, who took a daisy with her to space as a symbol for her daughter, called Daisy. Schumer quipped that she got invited to space at the last minute and that she would be bringing a Black Panther toy. "This is what I'm delivering. I don't understand what it means, but it was in my bag when I received the SMS while on the subway, and they asked if I wanted to go to space," She joked. "So I'm going to space."
Meanwhile, Sánchez slammed the backlash before the trip, saying: "I would love to have them come to Blue Origin and see the thousands of employees that don't just work here but they put their heart and soul into this vehicle. They love their work and they love the mission and it's a big deal for them."
"So when we hear comments like that, I just say, 'Trust me. Come with me. I'll show you what this is about, and it's really eye-opening."
