Spiderman: Homecoming 2 is looking like it is racking up quite an impressive cast as Michael Keaton is rumoured to be playing the Vulture again. Jake Gyllenhaal has also been in discussion about the possibility of playing the villain, Mysterio, which would the first time the villain appears in any Marvel live-action film.
Director Jon Watts and screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers will return for the creation of the film, with Tom Holland returning to play Peter Parker and Zendaya and Marisa Tomei also coming back for the sequel.
In March, Jason Bourne star, Matt Damon, reportedly passed on the villain role in Spider-Man 2, indicating Sony and Marvel first eyed Damon for Mysterio. Gyllenhaal has been rumoured to be joining the Marvel movie franchise for 5 years and it was even suggested that he might portray Batman in a new standalone film for Warner Bros. if Ben Affleck moves on from the role. Gyllenhaal was also considered to take Tobey Maguire's place during the previous "Spider-Man" franchise that ruled the early 2000s when Maguire hurt his back filming “Seabiscuit” and risked his appearance in the movie.
ComicBook.com speculated that the movie industry would need more actors to step in and cover multiple movies as villains after the likely axing of Loki and Thanos after the latest Avengers movie, even speculating that: “Given their skill sets, characters like Dormammu and Mysterio could be solid additions to the MCU, and they could become the connective tissue of several different heroes' franchises moving forward.”
As for Keaton, his performance in 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming was played a large part in the success of the film, and many fans were wondering if the Vulture would be back in the upcoming sequel. Production for Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 is expected to begin in London this summer. The ending of the first Spiderman movie involved Peter Parker saving the Vultures life and, although Keaton hasn't said much about returning, it seems like an obvious choice. However, it does seem that Mysterio will end up as the main villain in Spider-Man: Homecoming 2. The end of the first film also saw Peter Parker decline Tony Stark's invitation to join the Avengers full-time and we all know how that ended up.
The cast is expected to be announced just before the filming for the movie begins although it is speculated that the Vulture will only be featured in small parts of the film.
Sources suggest that Sony and Marvel will work together in the production of the film and it is rumoured that they are looking to cast a new male and female lead, with the male lead to be played by an A-list actor. Actresses for the female role, which is expected to be someone in her 20s, are currently being auditioned by execs. The Hollywood Reporter revealed Sony was planning projects – presumed spinoffs – that would shift some attention to long-time Spider-Man foes, Kraven the Hunter and Mysterio.
Filming is said to take place in cities across the globe – starting in London and moving on to Atlanta andBerlin, with Venice and Prague also named as filming locations – which could hint at a villain with an international essence.
