VIDEO: WHAT IS HAPPENING TO JIM CARREY?
It is often difficult for us to understand actors. Why? Because the idea of choosing to play make-believe long after becoming an adult is a peculiar thing. So, rather than understanding them, we accept the information we are given. We watch actors on TV, and that is who they become.
But, we often forget that actors are people. They are not the characters they play – they are not the parts they audition for. A character is who you see on TV, an actor is a person in the real world. A person who feels just as deeply as us regular folks.
There is, however, one difference. When we have bad days, it is considered a bad day. But when a famous actor like Jim Carrey has a moment of weakness, the spotlight is on him (as well as all the eyes), and it becomes a worldwide topic.
That is why everyone has been begging the question lately: what is happening to Jim Carrey??
The reason we are confused and a bit taken back by his recent behaviour is because we aren't seeing the human Jim Carrey is... we're seeing him as the iconic comedic character in movies we watch on TV.
That's right. Carrey's most popular trademark is his hilarious physical acting in movies that have made him one of the most iconic comedic actors of all time. These include his hilarious characters in movies such as:
- Dumb and Dumber (funniest Jim Carrey moments)
- The Cable Guy (funniest Jim Carrey moments)
- Ace Ventura (funniest Jim Carrey moments)
- The Mask (funniest Jim Carrey moments)
- Bruce Almighty (funniest Jim Carrey moments)
- Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events (funniest Jim Carrey moments)
- Liar Liar (funniest Jim Carrey moments)
- Yes Man (funniest Jim Carrey moments)
... To name a few.
We've also seen him as a kind, inspiring icon in a motivational speech where he says:
"My father could have been a comedian but he didn't believe that that was possible for him. And so he made a conservative choice. Instead, he got a safe job as an accountant, and, when I was twelve years old, he was let go from that safe job, and our family had to do whatever we could to survive. I learned many great lessons from my father, not the least of which was that you can fail at what you don't want, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love."
But, in recent years, we have slowly but surely been exposed to a very different, dark side of Jim Carrey that none of us could have picked up from our character-inspired idea of him.
In fact, we've seen a side of Carrey that shows different types of creativity (seen in his documentary about his painting), depression and existential crisis – as seen in a recent interview with E News at New York Fashion Week.
So, if you're wondering what is happening to Jim Carrey (as most of you are), here is the answer: Jim Carrey is living his own truth as a human being when he is off screen.
In the video above, Jim Carrey explains this concept when talking how he sees the world. In the video, Carrey explains:
"As an actor, you play characters and, if you go deep enough into those characters, you realize that your own character is pretty thin to begin with. And then you suddenly have this separation and go, 'Who is Jim Carrey?', oh he doesn't exist actually."
