VIDEO: EXPIRATION DATES ARE A LIE!
Ever had one of those friends that will literally eat everything regardless of the taste but you think it's just a little too far when they cross the expiration date line? It turns out, those people aren’t necessarily as crazy and disgusting as you thought because, of course, Adam from College Humor has to ruin everything. It turns out you may be wasting way more food than you thought.
According to Time, food dating emerged in the 1970s, prompted by consumer demand as Americans produced less of their own food but still demanded information about how it was made. The dates solely indicate freshness and are used by manufacturers to convey when the product is at its peak. That means the food does not expire in the sense of becoming inedible, they're more of a suggestion. For un-refrigerated foods, there may be no difference in taste or quality, and expired foods won’t necessarily make people sick. Believe it or not, no matter how gross that chunky milk smells, it's still ok to... well... eat (if you have the stomach for it).
We say use your instinct over dates! You will find out sooner or later... right?
