VIDEO: HIPSTERS... EXPLAIN YOURSELVES!

We hear the phrase all the time: "hipster". We love to make fun of the term and the people who take it just a little too far, with their curled moustaches and organic cucumbers.

Hipsters are actually people who follow trends that aren't "mainstream" but eventually make it so because all of the other hipsters that follow the trend. Hipsters are a subculture of American consumer for whom the idea behind the marketing holds more value than the product being marketed.

Still confused? This conversation might jog your memory:
Befuddled observer: "It's 79 degrees out, why are you wearing a knitted wool cap?"
Hipster: "Because I reject the mainstream banality of weather in favour of an authentic expression of my inner self."

Still not quite sure what to classify as hipster? Here are a couple of the most hipster things people have ever seen:

• A girl spinning yarn in the waiting room of a BMW service centre
• The person who got a pair of converse permanently tattooed onto their feet
• A guy riding his camel down the street
