'Iron' Mike Tyson was a heavyweight boxing phenomenon. He was a formidable competitor that instilled fear of the hearts of his opponents. Tough as nails, Iron Mike had brutal lefts and crushing rights, and he was fast too.

Born on 30 June 1966, he won Olympic gold medals as an amateur in 18=981 and 1982. He then competed in 58 professional fights between 1985 and 2005, winning 50, losing just six, with two no contests. It's the 44 knockouts that made him such a badass, though. Tyson fought 15 times in his first year as a pro and won his first 19 professional fights by knocking his opponents out, 12 of them in the first round. He claimed 26 wins by KO or TKO in his first 28 fights, with 16 of them in the first round, and was undefeated in his first 37 bouts.

He went on to win the WBC title in 1986 and the WBA and IBF title in 1987. This made Tyson the first heavyweight to hold all three belts simultaneously, and the only heavyweight to successively unify them. He defended his titles nine times before losing to Buster Douglas in 1990, who became the first person to knock Tyson out.

He managed to regain the WBC and WBA titles in 1986, making him just the 6th heavyweight fighter to regain his title after losing them. Joining Hall-of-Famers like Muhammad Ali, Evander Holyfield and George Forman in the process.

His life has not been without controversy. By the age of 13, the young Tyson had been arrested for petty crimes 38 times. Iron Mike served three years in prison after being convicted of rape in 1992, then another 9 months in 1999 for assaulting two motorists after a traffic accident. He also pleaded guilty to drug possession and driving under the influence in 2007.

Tyson was a notoriously big spender and managed to get himself into financial trouble. He eventually declared bankruptcy in 2003, even though he had earned $300 million in his career up to then, with media reports stating he was $23 million in debt.

He's owned tigers, tended to hundreds of pigeons, checked himself into rehab for various addictions and converted to Islam. He's starred in movies and his own one-man-show and launched the Mike Tyson Cares Foundation. He's written books, started a YouTube channel and tattooed his face. He's been married three times, has seven children and bitten off the ear of Evader Holyfield during a pro fight.

Iron Mike Tyson is one of the best boxers to ever enter the ring. He has entertained millions both with his boxing and his personal adventures, and fully deserves his status as a legend.
