THE DARKLY SURREAL SERIES ‘DON’T HUG ME I’M SCARED’ COMING TO UK
Becky Sloan and Joe Pelling of BeckyandJoes have yet again teased the UK with a new season of their darkly surreal series called Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared . A year after the release of episode 6, Sloan hinted in 2017 that they are busy with additional work in the Don't Hug Me I'm Scared series. And finally the new series is on its way.
The season of six new original episodes premieres for the first time on UK’s Channel 4 in September 2022.
Each episode revolves around three characters referred to as Red Guy, Yellow Guy and Duck. Each episode typically goes with the three main characters meeting one or several other anthropomorphic characters. The scene is also met with a musical number which relates to the basic concept of day-to-day life. However, the dark twist is revealed as each song progresses.
After some time it becomes apparent that the message is self-contradicting. The teacher character is also revealed to have sinister motives. Each episode has a surreal twist in the climax which involves a plot twist involving the addition of graphic violence or other warped themes. Later in the series, the characters begin questioning the nature of their reality and the bizarre messages of the teachers. The six episodes explore and discuss the subjects of creativity, time, love, technology, diet, and dreams.
